The Professional Development Program
The War and the Canadian Experience Teachers' professional Development Study Tour introduces educators to the history of Canada in two world wars and the potential for using the subject as a vehicle to foster critical thinking skills and historical consciousness in today's young people. Nearly all have reported that the program invigorated their teaching, engaging them with new ideas and methods that enhance relationships between school and community.

Historical thinking
The professional development program builds on the approach outlined by the Big Six historical thinking concepts. Soldiers' military service files form the basis for the evidence-based research approach to crafting biographies, which we use as historical entry points into the greater picture of the war as well as pedagogical entry points into teaching using primary sources in the classroom. Art, literature and poetry, monuments and memorials also serve as sources in our site-based learning experience on the tour.
